The job

A 16-notch direct-mount chainring tool driven through a separate 36 mm wrench or crowfoot.

Working component

Matching Shimano direct-mount chainring lockring

Identify which lockring you are servicing

A chainring, cassette and bottom-bracket cup can each require different tooling. Start with the exact component and contact dimensions.

What this choice changes

A 41 mm contact for matching Shimano chainring lockrings

The LRT-4 is for a matching Shimano direct-mount chainring lockring, not for an external bottom-bracket cup. Its 16-notch contact measures 41 mm outside, which is a different fitting from the larger 16-notch BBT-9/BBT-19.2 family. Counting the notches alone is therefore not enough to choose between these tools.

The CNC-machined 6061 aluminum body has a flat engagement face and 36 mm external driving flats. You supply the driving wrench. Where the component procedure requires a torque-wrench connection, Park Tool identifies its TWB-36 crowfoot as a separate accessory; neither that crowfoot nor a torque wrench is included.

Park Tool names Shimano XTR 9120, XT 8120 and MT900 examples. Verify the exact crank and lockring model before ordering rather than assuming that every Shimano direct-mount system shares the contact. This tool’s job is chainring retention; it does not replace a slotted chainring-nut counterhold or a crank puller.

Fit checks & limits

  • Not interchangeable with 44–45 mm 16-notch bottom-bracket tools.
  • The selected listing uses XT 8100 shorthand while the maker names XT 8120; confirm the actual crank and lockring model.

Questions before you choose

Will a 16-notch bottom-bracket tool work instead?

Not on notch count alone. The LRT-4 contact is 41 mm outside, distinct from the larger BBT-9/BBT-19.2 fitting.

Does it include a torque-wrench adapter?

No. The tool’s external flats are 36 mm. The maker’s TWB-36 crowfoot and the torque wrench are sold separately.

Is this for ordinary chainring bolts?

It engages a direct-mount chainring lockring. A slotted chainring nut uses a different counterhold such as a correctly fitting CNW-2.
