Mechanical scale reading

Identify the spoke before converting

Match material, shape and section dimensions to the actual conversion entry.

What this choice changes

A mechanical reading matched to the actual spoke

The TM-1 adds a measurement that a spoke wrench and truing stand do not provide. Its mechanical reading lets you compare spoke tension; the included conversion table or the maker’s app converts that reading to kilograms-force for a matching spoke. Material, shape and section size determine which conversion applies.

Park Tool lists round and bladed steel spokes, selected aluminum and titanium sizes, Spinergy PBO and Mavic R2R carbon-fiber applications. The selected-size restriction matters: broad claims about nearly any spoke do not mean every material and diameter has an absolute conversion. The supplied sizing gauge covers six common round-spoke diameters; a bladed section may need another measuring tool.

Compare HOZAN C-738 if you prefer its digital displacement display and guide/checker arrangement. Digital versus mechanical does not itself establish an accuracy ranking. Neither instrument supplies the wheel or rim maker’s permitted target tension, and a scale reading must not be mistaken for that target.

Choose for your actual setup

Identify the spoke before converting

Match material, shape and section dimensions to the actual conversion entry.

Find the component’s target separately

The meter describes what is measured; the wheel/rim specification determines the permitted target.

Fit checks & limits

  • Aluminum/titanium conversion is available only for selected sizes.
  • No universal target tension or quantified accuracy percentage.
  • The unconverted mechanical scale is not directly kilograms-force.

Questions before you choose

Can I read the scale as kgf?

Not without the correct conversion entry. Match the spoke’s material and dimensions, then use the supplied data.

Does the meter tell me the correct target for every wheel?

No. Obtain that requirement from the actual wheel/rim specification.

Why choose HOZAN’s digital tool instead?

It offers a different displacement-display and guide/checker format. Its millimetre reading also requires the matching conversion, so digital does not remove that step.
