The job

Shaped pliers for opening and closing compatible derailleur-chain master links.

Working contact

Compatible master/quick links

Identify the connector

Inspect the chain’s actual joining link and its instructions. A master link and a clip-on side-plate connector are not the same receiving interface.

What this choice changes

Work the connector instead of the chain rivet

The MLP-1.2 belongs with chain tools because it works a different connection: the master link. Its shaped jaws act on the connector rather than pressing a rivet through a chain plate. Choose it when the actual chain uses the supported link style; choose a rivet driver when the joining method requires pin work.

Park Tool’s current MLP-1.2 scope includes supported 5–13-speed derailleur master links, with eTap AXS, Shimano XTR 12-speed and Campagnolo Ekar 13-speed named. It excludes the connector style with both pins fixed to one plate and a clipping side plate or spring clip. The construction of the link matters alongside its speed label.

The selected offer is one pair of pliers. It does not establish a replacement connector or chain as part of the purchase. Keep the link maker’s reuse instructions with the choice: a tool being able to operate a connector does not make that connector reusable.

Choose for your actual setup

Identify the connector

Inspect the chain’s actual joining link and its instructions. A master link and a clip-on side-plate connector are not the same receiving interface.

Plan the consumable separately

If the chain maker requires a new joining link, compare its exact model independently. The plier package is not evidence that a replacement link is supplied.

Fit checks & limits

  • No universal single-speed or spring-clip-link compatibility is claimed.
  • Overall length fields conflict; precise handle length and weight are not used as selection attributes.

Questions before you choose

Can these replace a chain breaker?

They work a supported master link. A rivet-driving operation needs the appropriate chain tool, so the two roles can be complementary.

Can I reuse any link after opening it?

The pliers do not establish reusability. Follow the exact connector maker’s replacement and reuse instructions.

Are these only for non-Shimano chains?

That broad wording in an older listing is incomplete. The current exact-model maker page names supported XTR 12-speed master links; match the actual link rather than choosing only by brand.
