Check Specialist Frame-Tool Scope Before Buying
Distinguish diagnosis, permitted correction and material removal, then compare the actual stock cutters, pilots, sockets and taps.
| Choice | Compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | DAG-3 / FFG-2 | Different reference features; no repairability diagnosis |
| Restricted correction | FFS-2 | Steel-only scope |
| Brake-mount facing | DT-5.2 | Supplied adapters/cutters; 2197 abrasive adapter separate |
| Head-tube or race-seat preparation | HTR-1B / CRC-1 | Different stock cutters and pilots |
| Thread or cap contact | TAP-8 / TAP-6 / FCT-1 / SKT-6 | Exact thread, profile, direction and manual actuation |
Decide whether the task is measurement or material change
DAG-3 references the rim from a derailleur hanger. FFG-2 checks supported dropout parallelism and excludes thru axles. The two gauges answer different questions; neither by itself diagnoses that a damaged frame or fork is suitable for repair.
FFS-2 is a correction lever with an explicit steel-only scope. FFG-2’s permitted carbon-dropout measurement is not permission for carbon correction. Match the task and material before looking at adjustment range or handle length.
Compare the supplied facing configuration
DT-5.2 includes four telescoping axle adapters and two cutters for its stated brake-mount work. Its recommended 2197 carbon abrasive adapter is separate. Do not choose the set as though every recommended accessory were already in the case.
HTR-1B supplies its own reamer, facer and pilots. Its stock configuration establishes a particular external-cup headset scope; broader family uses require the exact optional tooling. Compare the selected component and supplied contacts rather than the widest application mentioned for the tool family.
Read cutter labels as distinct working contacts
CRC-1 addresses crown-race-seat preparation with two cutters and two bushings for its stated configurations. Several size labels can belong to different cutters; they should not be treated as one universal range or as evidence that every fork material can be machined.
The maker marks CRC-1 discontinued. That is useful when considering model and accessory support, but it is not a statement about Amazon availability. Cutting-fluid requirements also do not mean fluid is included with the offer.
Match threads and suspension contacts exactly
TAP-8 is M5 × 0.8 for its frame-fitting task. TAP-6 supplies right- and left-hand 9/16–20 pedal taps, not the half-inch pedal system. A thread match identifies the cutting contact; it does not establish that stripped or damaged material can be restored.
FCT-1 uses its named suspension-cap profiles. SKT-6 supplies six flat-faced sockets in 24, 26, 27, 28, 30 and 32 mm, including a particular 27 mm taper for named applications. Check the exact cap and access; neither a brand list nor a square drive establishes universal cap fit or impact-driver permission.
Plan support without confusing it with repair authorization
A repair stand such as PCS-10.3 supports the bicycle within its own setup conditions. DF-1 is a workshop dummy fork for organizing a supported repair arrangement, not a riding fork or a replacement for the main load support. Choose each for its actual role.
Before buying specialist tooling, identify the permitted job, exact component, material, supplied cutter or contact, missing accessories and required support. When one is uncertain, a larger set does not resolve it. These are purchase checks, not a metalworking or frame-repair procedure.
Questions before you choose
Does a gauge showing misalignment mean a straightening tool is appropriate?
No. The measurement, component condition and permitted correction are separate. FFS-2 is steel-only; a measuring tool does not grant repair permission for other materials.
How should I price a facing setup with optional accessories?
Start with the exact contents of the selected set, then add only accessories required for the established component application. DT-5.2’s recommended 2197 adapter, for example, is separate.
Do the correct pedal taps guarantee a repair?
No. TAP-6’s right- and left-hand 9/16–20 contacts define its thread scope. They do not establish that damaged material is recoverable or suitable for service.
